Rotary Rope Project

This project is based around a scrap product from Telstra. Rotary Rope (also referred to as Parramatta Rope) is a blue and yellow plastic twisted rope around 7mm in diameter. It is a popular size for all sorts of jobs, but Telstra use the rope to draw new cables through underground conduits.

Due to the complex and valuable nature of the cables, they prefer to use new rope with each pull, to minimise the chance of breakage or damage to the cables.

Around 2001, President Rebecca Fleming initiated this project. The club collects the scrap from Telstra workshop, sorts and bundles the rope into seedbags, and sends it to DIK-RAWKS for shipment.

We currently estimate that over 1000 km of rope has been sorted and sent in that time.

Uses for the rope by the recipients are many and varied, and we would love some pictures of the rope in action. Uses include :

  • Pulling down trees for harvest and maintenance
  • Temporary supports when building houses
  • Tying sugar cane
  • Tying tarps on houses
  • Making fishing nets
  • distribution to scout troops
  • Skipping ropes
  • Temporary barriers and fences
  • Pig leash
  • Boat ropes for priests
